A Tiktok user placed a greeting card on the keyboard and then closed the lid

MacBook and other laptops can be damaged quickly if they are exposed to daily use. The tiktoker Classicheidi has apparently been able to damage her Macbook Air with a greeting card made of paper. She destroyed the display so much that the laptop is almost unusable.

The reason for this: The Tiktok woman put the greeting card on the keyboard of her Macbook Air. She then closed the lid, thereby damaging the thin glass pane and the crystal layer of the LCD behind it. “Apparently, the print from this piece of paper was enough to break my screen internally,” Classicheidi said.

In the video it also looks as if the greeting card was placed near the display hinge. If the lid is then closed at the outer edge, a strong leverage effect is created on the other side. This problem has been known to Apple for a long time. The Group warned about this in 2023, for example.

    Not necessarily an Apple problem

It is not advisable to store even thin objects such as camera covers, palm rests or keyboard covers between the screen and the keyboard. This “can interfere with the display when closed and cause damage to your display,” Apple writes.

In tests, it was noticed that the dust and other particles already leave traces on the glass during normal use when the Macbook is closed. A piece of paper can be dangerous accordingly.

The current generation of the Macbook Air M4 has a small rubber layer on the edge of the display, which is supposed to protect. A slightly older model seems to be shown in the Tiktok video. Some competing devices such as the framework laptop and most Lenovo thinkpads also have a slightly protruding display edge and slightly recessed display to reduce damage. The Surface laptop also has a thin rubber layer on the edge. Nevertheless, damage does not always seem to be preventable – regardless of which manufacturer the device comes from.
