AMD is rumored to be working on a Radeon RX 9070 GRE with 16 GB of memory. A possible market launch in China this case is being suggested on the Board Channels platform.

New information about a Radeon RX 9070 GRE has appeared on the Chinese platform Board Channels, which suggests an upcoming version with 16 GiB of graphics memory. So far, the model is only sold as a 12 GiB variant in Asia. With the memory expansion, the card would be raised to the level of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT with also 16 GiB.

New Radeon RX 9070 GRE Launch Date

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is classified with 12 GiB between RX 9060 XT and RX 9070. It uses 48 instead of 56 compute units and a 192-bit interface with 12 GB of memory, which reduces the raw performance by about five percent compared to the RX 9070. Due to the higher boost clock, the GRE’s practical performance of 12 GiB is still around 85 to 87 percent of the RX 9070. In 1440p,

The GRE reaches an average of approx. 30 Percent more power than the RX 9060 XT and RTX 5060 Ti 16 GiB, compared to the Radeon RX 7800 XT it would be 10 percent, the RTX 4070 about 13 percent. However, the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 XT remain clearly faster. In terms of ray tracing, the RX 9070 GRE is almost at the level of an RTX 4070 in the test. The 12 GiB version of the GRE card, which we sent through the bench course, can be classified as a solid 1440p all-rounder with memory and cache limitations, which is an interesting choice in China, but is only available by import in this country.

Against this background, a variant with 16 GiB would not only be a simple memory expansion, but also a sensible step to close the gap to the RX 9070 to a greater extent. In addition to the memory size, the rumors also talk about a wider connection and thus higher bandwidth. It remains to be seen whether and to what extent AMD will additionally change the GPU equipment and bring the GRE to the European market (similar to the RX 7900 GRE). September to October is mentioned as a possible period for the introduction of the new variant. Whether the RX 9070 GRE with 16 GiB will be released only regionally in China or worldwide is currently open.

Would you go for a Radeon RX 9070 GRE with 12 or 16 GB if the card were available in Germany? Are you perhaps even waiting for such a card?
