Philips has introduced a high-resolution monitor with 5K resolution, IPS Black and Thunderbolt 4: the Brilliance 27E3U7903. The 27-inch screen delivers 5,120 × 2,880 pixels on 27 inches, which means a pixel density of 218 ppi. Thunderbolt 4 is available as input and output.

The said resolution, which is also referred to as UHD+, delivers about 80 percent more pixels than 4K UHD with about 14.75 million pixels. The rare 5K resolution is also offered by other monitors such as the popular Apple Studio Display (review), the Asus PA27JCV, the BenQ PD2730S or a ViewSonic model with the VP2788-5K. The resolution is exactly four times that of WQHD.

    High contrast indicates IPS Black

It is not explicitly mentioned either in the press release or on the product pages, but the high contrast ratio indicates the IPS Black display technology, because conventional IPS panels do not reach this value.

The brightness is given without further context at 500 cd/m2. However, this should not be the maximum yet, because certification according to the VESA standard DisplayHDR 600 requires at least 600 cd / m2 in some cases.

Even if everything screams for professional technology, it’s not the color depth, because instead of real 10 bits there is an 8-bit panel with FRC. For this, the color space coverage is very high with, for example, 99 percent DCI-P3 and 99.5 percent Adobe RGB. The display is also “Calman Ready”.

    Thunderbolt goes in and out

Surprisingly, the monitor lacks a DisplayPort. The two Thunderbolt 4 ports also offer a DisplayPort mode for this. The downstream port also provides up to 96 watts of power, while the upstream port provides a maximum of 15 watts. In addition, an HDMI 2.1 port is installed. In addition, there is a USB hub with two USB-A and one USB-C, a headphone jack and a network connection for Gigabit LAN.

    Webcam and Smart KVM

The webcam mounted on the upper edge works with a 5MP sensor and an integrated microphone. A login via face recognition (Windows Hello) and AI-supported auto-framing are supported. The Smart KVM function allows convenient switching between two systems by pressing the CTRL key on the keyboard three times.

In addition, the monitor has integrated stereo speakers and a motion sensor (PowerSensor 2) with which the presence or absence of a user is detected in order to save energy.

The wide stand at the top allows tilting and panning of the display as well as height adjustment with 150 mm clearance and the pivot mode. Thanks to the VESA device, an alternative holder can be used.

    Key data, price and availability

The Philips Brilliance 27E3U7903 should be available in September at a recommended retail price of 1,159 euros. In terms of equipment and price, it is particularly close to the above-mentioned ViewSonic VP2788-5K.
