Entire row melted : Sapphire Radeon 9070 XT Nitro+ with 12V-2×6 fried

The melted 12V 2×6 power connector – this time, a whole series of pins were scorched. This time, the affected card is a Sapphire Radeon 9070 XT Nitro+.

It has long been known that the new GPU power connector of the 12VHPWR type and its newer revision 12V-2×6 are not really reliable. There are damage reports about melted plugs and sockets, especially in connection with Nvidia graphics cards, because the new connector is mainly used by these. At least occasionally, however, Radeon models also rely on the 12V-2 × 6 – and then apparently have the same problems.

In keeping with this, the second corresponding message has already appeared for one of the corresponding graphics cards, the Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT Nitro+. Already three weeks ago, Reddit user TemporaryDelivery174 reported about a melted power plug, now Reddit user ProfessionalHost3913 also had the problem. He has uploaded pictures in the Radeon subreddit, according to which an entire row of pins is attached to the power plug used.

The said Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT Nitro+ with 12V-2 × 6 was therefore only in use for one to two months. But recently, the video card has been experiencing problems under load – the PC freezes with a blackscreen. The cause was identified as the melted plug of the included adapter, and this despite the fact that the GPU was allegedly never overclocked or operated outside of its specifications. So again, the underlying standard should simply be the problem.

After all: the socket of the video card was apparently not damaged by the overheating. So the Sapphire RMA department probably only needs to replace the adapter so that ProfessionalHost3913 can use its graphics card regularly again. However, the user’s confidence in the new power connection is likely to be permanently disturbed – and in view of the many damage reports, the 12V-2 × 6 no longer has a generally too good reputation. It is therefore urgently time for a third revision, which will finally consign such problems to the past.
